Matteograssi gives you wings (Red Bull Hangar 7)

Matteograssi has furnished the innovative Hangar 7, owned by the founder of Red Bull, the world’s best selling energy drink. This extraordinary and unusual  hangar has always been considered a private museum, owned by Dietrich Mateschitz, the founder of well-known Red Bull energetic drink that gives you wings !!! This exciting hangar is the headquarter of the Flying Bulls, the air members of this famous brand, located in Salzburg Austria. The team, that consists of flight professionals, was born on 1980. Starting from that moment a series of important airplanes and new members joined the group. The increase of the fleet has created a problem of living space. The old hangar was not large enough, so it was  decided to create the ultramodern Hangar 7. It’s not just the idea and the concept of Hangar-7 to be outside the ordinary; the process of its construction has been pretty extraordinary as well. Because of its unusual shape, the model has even had to pass the  wind tunnel tests. Finally, in 2003, Hangar 7 has been  opened to the public and become a real attraction for tourists and curious. It is an impressive space, of innovative design, where aviation history, technology, entertainment, art and cooking are woven together to create a coexistence absolutely unique. To decorate such a prestigious location, Red Bull choosed an Italian company: matteograssi. . The modern, attractive design of its products was immediately appreciated by Mr. Red Bull himself, convinced that the quality of the Brianza company’s creations  could enhance the interiors of its futuristic Hangar. Initally, Dietrich Mateschitz wanted to furnish his own office, then he asked matteograssi to study and realize the furniture for the collective areas. Matteograssi supplied the Hangar with Openside collection, designed by Franco Poli, to make lovely the ground floor where people are welcomed to visit the museum. The clean lines of the sofas are enhanced by soft leather covers and have been realized in Bianco Neve and Rosso Bolero following the project strongly endorsed by Mateschitz himself. A lot of other products have been placed in the waiting areas and in the operation spaces such as UL400 benches, designed by Ulrich, Blox, Bristol and Berlin sofas, Mizar and Carol swivel armchairs and Metron tables. A total of  262 seats. All the furniture has been realized in fine coach hide and soft leather  with matteograssi’s comfortable lines that adapt particularly  to the social areas. www.matteograssi.com sonicsonic Matteograssi gives you wings (Red Bull Hangar 7) Italian Design Italian Design – made in italy design furniture

Messy children make better learners: Toddlers learn words for nonsolids better when getting messy in a highchair

Messy children make better learners: Toddlers learn words for nonsolids better when getting messy in a highchair Parents, let your children get messy in the high chair: They learn better that way. That’s according to a new study which concludes that a 16-month-old’s setting and degree of interaction enhances his or her ability to identify nonsolid objects and name them. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Dec. 2, 2013 — Attention, parents: The messier your child gets while playing with food in the high chair, the more he or she is learning.Researchers at the University of Iowa studied how 16-month-old children learn words for nonsolid objects, from oatmeal to glue. Previous research has shown that toddlers learn more readily about solid objects because they can easily identify them due to their unchanging size and shape. But oozy, gooey, runny stuff? Not so much.New research shows that changes if you put toddlers in a setting they know well, such as shoving stuff in their mouths. In those instances, word learning increases, because children at that age are “used to seeing nonsolid things in this context, when they’re eating,” says Larissa Samuelson, associate professor in psychology at the UI who has worked for years on how children learn to associate words with objects. “And, if you expose them to these things when they’re in a highchair, they do better. They’re familiar with the setting and that helps them remember and use what they already know about nonsolids.”In a paper published in the journal Developmental Science, Samuelson and her team at the UI tested their idea by exposing 16-month-olds to 14 nonsolid objects, mostly food and drinks such as applesauce, pudding, juice, and soup. They presented the items and gave them made-up words, such as “dax” or “kiv.” A minute later, they asked the children to identify the same food in different sizes or shapes. The task required the youngsters to go beyond relying simply on shape and size and to explore what the substances were made of to make the correct identification and word choice. Not surprisingly, many children gleefully dove into this task by poking, prodding, touching, feeling, eating — and yes, throwing — the nonsolids in order to understand what they were and make the correct association with the hypothetical names. … For more info: Messy children make better learners: Toddlers learn words for nonsolids better when getting messy in a highchair ScienceDaily: Top Health News Messy children make better learners: Toddlers learn words for nonsolids better when getting messy in a highchair L’articolo Messy children make better learners: Toddlers learn words for nonsolids better when getting messy in a highchair sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

I Was Not Alone: How LBBC Helped Me Live Beyond Breast Cancer

I Was Not Alone: How LBBC Helped Me Live Beyond Breast Cancer via LBBC’s Blog: Last week, Amy Lessack wrote about why she’s giving back to LBBC on #GivingTuesday. Today, we are proud to present this blog post by Debby Freedman, an LBBC volunteer who credits our organization with helpling her through her diagnosis, treatment and beyond. With one day left until the start of our #GivingTuesday activities, we hope Debby’s story will inspire you to support LBBC tomorrow and help us reach more women like her. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about 5 years ago and I had surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I first connected with LBBC when I was in chemo.  I was still fairly newly diagnosed and I was really scared.  I needed someone to talk to who could understand what I was going through and who wouldn’t be alarmed by my fear. I called LBBC’s Breast Cancer Helpline and spoke to a fellow survivor.  The call was a huge relief to me. The LBBC Helpline volunteer reassured me and helped me feel that I was not alone in facing the fear that comes with cancer. After calling the Helpline, I began to rely on LBBC for information about treatment, side effects and prevention.  I participated in calls with experts on particular aspects of breast cancer, read brochures and attended LBBC’s annual conference.  Throughout all of these, I loved LBBC’s mission of living BEYOND cancer and the fact that I could trust the information I got from them. About a year and a half after my diagnosis, I wanted to do something to help other survivors and, after a lot of training, I began to volunteer on the LBBC Helpline. Volunteering for the Helpline has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life because in the course of one phone call, you can hear that you are making a big difference in a survivor’s life. LBBC has made a big difference in my life and has helped me to really feel that I am a survivor.  Please support LBBC! Learn about LBBC’s programs and services that help all those affected by breast cancer. Support LBBC on #GivingTuesday. Follow LBBC on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about our #GivingTuesday activities. Confronting the lung cancer stigma

Confronting the lung cancer stigma via Cancerwise | Cancer blog from MD Anderson Cancer Center: By Andrew Davison I lost my dad to lung cancer. Thirteen years later, I was diagnosed with the same illness that took his life. The difference was that he smoked two packs of cigarettes day, and I did not. While I did smoke occasionally in my early 20s, I have been active and healthy for most of my life. But whether a person smokes or not shouldn’t matter in how we approach lung cancer patients. Through my lung cancer treatment journey, I’ve learned we need to end the stigma surrounding lung cancer. My lung cancer diagnosisAlmost four months ago, I was riding on top of the world, literally. In the midst of a five-hour mountain bike ride at a ski resort in Colorado, I crashed. I was a little banged up and went in to get checked out. After a few stitches and a chest x-ray, I was cleared to go home with a bag of ice and some ibuprofen. Two hours later, while grilling at a summer BBQ, I missed a call from the clinic. The doctor left a voicemail saying that, after a second review, the radiologist had noticed a spot on the upper apex of my left lung. He said it was probably nothing, perhaps even just some scar tissue, and that I should schedule a CT scan. I turned to my wife and said, “There is no way that is good news.” I called my primary physician the next day. I pleaded to get a CT scan ordered and scheduled. The next day, the physician’s assistant informed me there was in fact an indeterminate mass, but that it was nothing to worry about. She said that given that I was young and healthy, did not smoke and maintained a regular fitness routine, it was most likely a false positive. Two days later, a biopsy, pneumothorax and test results revealed a positive diagnosis for stage 1 lung cancer. I was stunned. Lung cancer, of all things? I use my lungs regularly at high altitude and high intensity. They work fine. Lung cancer stigma for nonsmokersBy the second day, I had already become familiar with the ubiquitous question: “Did you smoke?” It is a logical question. We all know smoking causes lung cancer. But when people ask this, it brings up a range of emotions from resignation to annoyance. Sometimes I find myself getting defensive of the three years I did smoke. It was part of the culture. Besides, that was more than 25 years ago. And, though my doctors don’t know exactly what caused my lung cancer — Secondhand smoke exposure? Some other toxins? Something else? — they say those few years I smoked probably were not a factor. Other times I feel compelled to educate my listener about the increasing numbers of nonsmokers who contract lung cancer. Sometimes I gently remind my listener no one deserves an awful disease with low survival rates and tremendous suffering, even if he or she made poor choices in the past. When my dad received his lung cancer diagnosis, I was emotionally devastated. However, if I am honest, my response mimicked the party line, “Well, I am not surprised. After all, you smoked two-plus packs a day for 57 years.” His lung cancer battle lasted 14 months. It was a hard road from surgery through chemotherapy. I helped him through the entire process, and amidst the hardships, our relationship deepened and evolved. The reality is that lung cancer is a mass murderer on a global scale. According to the American Cancer Society, 13 percent of lung cancers are unrelated to smoking. Even with my family history, I knew relatively little about this pernicious disease until recently. Like millions of others, I believed that lung cancer only affected smokers. Changing the stigma surrounding lung cancerDoes it really matter if you smoked, were exposed to secondhand smoke, worked with toxins, lived in a radon house or randomly inhaled the wrong particles? Is anyone really in a position to claim that someone really deserves lung cancer? No, of course not. We need to change the way the world looks at lung cancer. We need to build programs around awareness and educate the public, invest more money in research detection and therapies as well as support the promotion of healthy lifestyles and prevention. It is time for lung cancer to become as relevant in our culture as breast cancer. It is time to end the stigma. It is time for change. Lung cancer is one of the cancers MD Anderson is focusing on as part of our Moon Shots Program to dramatically reduce cancer deaths. Learn more about our Lung Cancer Moon Shot. Junk food, poor oral health increase risk of premature heart disease

Junk food, poor oral health increase risk of premature heart disease The association between poor oral health and increased risk of cardiovascular disease should make the reduction of sugars such as those contained in junk food, particularly fizzy drinks, an important health policy target, say experts. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Dec. 2, 2013 — The association between poor oral health and increased risk of cardiovascular disease should make the reduction of sugars such as those contained in junk food, particularly fizzy drinks, an important health policy target, say experts writing in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.Share This:Poor oral hygiene and excess sugar consumption can lead to periodontal disease where the supporting bone around the teeth is destroyed. It is thought that chronic infection from gum disease can trigger an inflammatory response that leads to heart disease through a process called atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Despite convincing evidence linking poor oral health to premature heart disease, the most recent UK national guidance on the prevention of CVD at population level mentions the reduction of sugar only indirectly.Dr Ahmed Rashid, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge, who co-wrote the paper, said: “As well as having high levels of fats and salt, junk foods often contain a great deal of sugar and the effect this has on oral health may be an important additional mechanism by which junk food elevates risk of CVD.” He added: “Among different types of junk food, soft drinks have raised particular concerns and are the main source of free sugar for many individuals.”The authors refer to the well-publicized New York ‘soda ban’ controversy which has brought the issue to the attention of many. Yet, they point out, in the UK fizzy drinks remain commonly available in public areas ranging from hospitals to schools. Dr Rashid said: “The UK population should be encouraged to reduce fizzy drink intake and improve oral hygiene. Reducing sugar consumption and managing dental problems early could help prevent heart problems later in life.”Share this story on Facebook, Twitter, and Google:Other social bookmarking and sharing tools:|Story Source: The above story is based on materials provided by SAGE Publications, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS. Brain connectivity study reveals striking differences between men and women

Brain connectivity study reveals striking differences between men and women A new brain connectivity study has found striking differences in the neural wiring of men and women that’s lending credence to some commonly-held beliefs about their behavior. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Dec. 2, 2013 — A new brain connectivity study from Penn Medicine published today in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences found striking differences in the neural wiring of men and women that’s lending credence to some commonly-held beliefs about their behavior. In one of the largest studies looking at the “connectomes” of the sexes, Ragini Verma, PhD, an associate professor in the department of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues found greater neural connectivity from front to back and within one hemisphere in males, suggesting their brains are structured to facilitate connectivity between perception and coordinated action. In contrast, in females, the wiring goes between the left and right hemispheres, suggesting that they facilitate communication between the analytical and intuition.”These maps show us a stark difference–and complementarity–in the architecture of the human brain that helps provide a potential neural basis as to why men excel at certain tasks, and women at others,” said Verma. For instance, on average, men are more likely better at learning and performing a single task at hand, like cycling or navigating directions, whereas women have superior memory and social cognition skills, making them more equipped for multitasking and creating solutions that work for a group. They have a mentalistic approach, so to speak.Past studies have shown sex differences in the brain, but the neural wiring connecting regions across the whole brain that have been tied to such cognitive skills has never been fully shown in a large population. In the study, Verma and colleagues, including co-authors Ruben C. Gur, PhD, a professor of psychology in the department of Psychiatry, and Raquel E. Gur, MD, PhD, professor of Psychiatry, Neurology and Radiology, investigated the gender-specific differences in brain connectivity during the course of development in 949 individuals (521 females and 428 males) aged 8 to 22 years using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). DTI is water-based imaging technique that can trace and highlight the fiber pathways connecting the different regions of the brain, laying the foundation for a structural connectome or network of the whole brain. This sample of youths was studied as part of the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort, a National Institute of Mental Health-funded collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania Brain Behavior Laboratory and the Center for Applied Genomics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The brain is a roadmap of neural pathways linking many networks that help us process information and react accordingly, with behavior controlled by several of these sub-networks working in conjunction. In the study, the researchers found that females displayed greater connectivity in the supratentorial region, which contains the cerebrum, the largest part of the brain, between the left and right hemispheres. Males, on the other hand, displayed greater connectivity within each hemisphere.By contrast, the opposite prevailed in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that plays a major role in motor control, where males displayed greater inter-hemispheric connectivity and females displayed greater intra-hemispheric connectivity. These connections likely give men an efficient system for coordinated action, where the cerebellum and cortex participate in bridging between perceptual experiences in the back of the brain, and action, in the front of the brain, according to the authors. The female connections likely facilitate integration of the analytic and sequential processing modes of the left hemisphere with the spatial, intuitive information processing modes of the right side. The authors observed only a few gender differences in the connectivity in children younger than 13 years, but the differences were more pronounced in adolescents aged 14 to 17 years and young adults older than 17.The findings were also consistent with a Penn behavior study, of which this imaging study was a subset of, that demonstrated pronounced sexual differences. Females outperformed males on attention, word and face memory, and social cognition tests. … For more info: Brain connectivity study reveals striking differences between men and women ScienceDaily: Top Health News Brain connectivity study reveals striking differences between men and women L’articolo Brain connectivity study reveals striking differences between men and women sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Study: It’s not easy ‘being green’ Think you don’t recycle enough? You’re not alone. However, people’s ability to overcome self-doubt plays a critical role in how successfully they act in support of environmental issues, according to a new study. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Dec. 2, 2013 — Think you don’t recycle enough? You’re not alone. However, people’s ability to overcome self-doubt plays a critical role in how successfully they act in support of environmental issues, according to a new study co-authored by management and organizational behavior scholars from Rice University, the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto. The researchers examined the role of self-evaluations among those who support environmental issues and the evaluations’ effect on supportive behaviors. Their study, “It’s Not Easy Being Green: The Role of Self-Evaluations in Explaining Support for Environmental Issues,” will be published in the February issue of the Academy of Management Journal. The co-authors are Scott Sonenshein, an associate professor of management at Rice’s Jones Graduate School of Business; Katherine DeCelles, an assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resources management at Toronto’s Rotman School of Management; and Jane Dutton, the Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration and Psychology at Michigan’s Ross School of Business.”Supporting social issues often requires perseverance from individuals who want to make a difference,” the authors wrote. “Our research explains how the mixed self-evaluations of these individuals spring from their interpretation of issue-support challenges.”Sonenshein said people’s support for environmental issues and their doubt in their behavior’s effectiveness manifests itself in benign daily tasks such as recycling or the mode of transportation one chooses. “It’s this ongoing challenge,” Sonenshein said. “No matter what you do, the sense from the study is that it’s never enough. … For more info: Study: It’s not easy ‘being green’ ScienceDaily: Living Well News Study: It’s not easy ‘being green’ L’articolo Study: It’s not easy ‘being green’ sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Corals surviving ocean’s pollution

Corals surviving ocean’s pollution Unlike other marine species, the corals are still capable of adapting under current circumstances of sea acidification. “The first models indicated that the coral reefs would disappear midcentury, but our study reveals that corals are adapting to the ocean’s acidification that has increased since the industrial revolution”, the head researcher notes. via ScienceDaily: Ecology News: Dec. 2, 2013 — Unlike other marine species, the corals are still capable of adapting under current circumstances of sea acidification, reveled by researchers at the Center of Biological Research of the Northeast (Cibnor). “The first models indicated that the coral reefs would disappear midcentury, but our study reveals that corals are adapting to the ocean’s acidification that has increased since the industrial revolution,” Eduardo Balart Páez said, head of research. The project is performed along the Gulf of California and the coast of the Mexican Pacific, where a natural acidification gradient exists. The scientist analyzed colonies of Porites and Pocillopora, which are the more important species in the reefs of the Oriental Pacific Ocean.Through radiographic plates taken from samples of Porites panamensis of up to 22 years of age, changes in extension, density and calcification were visualized through time in the coralline skeleton. DNA was also extracted from both coralline groups with the objective of knowing their genetic diversity. This studies helped identified that the ocean’s acidification is affecting the coral’s growth but not dramatically, moreover the impact is different between males and females. The corals of the Pocillopora genus are hermaphrodites but not Porites, hence the answer is not the same for all.”This marine organisms are healthy, for the moment, because of a bigger energetic expense given by a genetic adaptation, however as the acidification levels rise there can be a disturbance in the sexual proportions,” warned Balart Páez.The researcher specified that the specie Porites panamensis is a massive coral that is frequently found from the shore to a depth of 30 meters. Meanwhile, the Pocillopora, ramified corals, require a great quantity of light given to their great dependence to the photosynthesis of their symbionts, and that is why they are found in shallow waters. The current acidification of the oceans is a consequence of the rise of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere, from the main anthropogenic activities (industry and transportation). The average pH of ocean waters was of 8.15 during preindustrial period, and now it has dropped to 8.05; meaning that, the ocean is turning more acid. Finally, the researcher considered that the threat of acidity over the reefs has not diminished. It will be necessary to do more research in order to find which coral species are the most prone to adapt, how the fragmentation of populations is affecting them and study the phenomenon in the laboratory to elaborate forecasts to possible future scenarios. Automated prediction alert helps identify patients at risk for 30-day readmission

Automated prediction alert helps identify patients at risk for 30-day readmission An automated prediction tool which identifies newly admitted patients who are at risk for readmission within 30 days of discharge has been successfully incorporated into the electronic health record of an American hospital. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Nov. 27, 2013 — An automated prediction tool which identifies newly admitted patients who are at risk for readmission within 30 days of discharge has been successfully incorporated into the electronic health record of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. The tool, developed by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine, is the subject of a study published in the December issue of the Journal of Hospital Medicine. The all-Penn team found that having been admitted to the hospital two or more times in the 12 months prior to admission is the best way to predict which patients are at risk for being readmitted in the 30 days after discharge. As a result of this finding, the automated tool is now able to identify patients as being “high risk” for readmission and creates a “flag” in their electronic health record. Upon admission of a high-risk patient, the flag appears next to the patient’s name in a column titled “readmission risk.” The flag can be double-clicked to display detailed information relevant to discharge planning including inpatient and emergency department visits over the previous 12 months, as well as information about the care teams, lengths of stay, and problem(s) associated with those prior admissions.”The results we’ve seen with this tool show that we can predict, with a good deal of accuracy, patients who are at risk of being readmitted within 30 days of discharge,” said lead author Charles A. Baillie, MD, an internal medicine specialist and fellow in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Penn Medicine. “With this knowledge, care teams have the ability to target these patients, making sure they receive the most intensive interventions necessary to prevent their readmission.”Interventions proven to help reduce 30-day readmissions include enhanced patient education and medication reconciliation on the day of discharge, increased home services to provide a safe landing, follow up appointments soon after discharge, and follow-up phone calls to ensure an extra level of protection. In the process of medication reconciliation, pharmacists compare a patient’s current hospital medication orders to all of the medications that the patient was taking at home prior to their hospital admission. This is done to avoid medication errors such as omissions, duplications, dosing errors, or drug interactions. In support of the study, the Penn Medicine Center for Evidence-based Practice identified in the published literature a number of variables associated with readmission to the hospital, including: prior admissions, visits to the emergency department, previous 30-day readmissions, and the presence of multiple medical disorders.Using two years of retrospective data, the team examined these variables using their own local data and found that a single variable — prior admission to the hospital two or more times within a span of 12 months — was the best predictor of being readmitted in the future. This marker was integrated into the electronic health record and was studied prospectively for the next year. … For more info: Automated prediction alert helps identify patients at risk for 30-day readmission ScienceDaily: Top Health News Automated prediction alert helps identify patients at risk for 30-day readmission L’articolo Automated prediction alert helps identify patients at risk for 30-day readmission sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Study finds one in 10 high school students hurt by dating partners

Study finds one in 10 high school students hurt by dating partners One in 10 high school youth in the US reports having been hit or physically hurt by a dating partner in the past year, according to a new study. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Nov. 25, 2013 — One in 10 high school youth in the U.S. reports having been hit or physically hurt by a dating partner in the past year, according to a new study led by a Boston University School of Public Health researcher. In a study published in the Journal of School Violence, Emily Rothman and Ziming Xuan, faculty at Boston University, analyzed data from 100,901 students who participated in the national Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System survey (YRBSS) for the years 1999-2011. They found that 9.3 percent of U.S. high school students have been “hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose” by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the past year — an annual prevalence rate that has not changed significantly in the past 12 years. The experience of being hit, slapped or otherwise physically hurt was reported at nearly equivalent rates by males and females who participated in the survey. There was a statistically significant increased rate of dating-violence victimization among black (12.9 percent) and multiracial (12.2 percent) youth, as compared to whites and Asians (8 percent) or Hispanic youth (10.5 percent). The rate of dating violence victimization remained stable over the 1999-2011 period for both males and females, and for each racial subgroup, despite a number of efforts to curb dating violence in the last decade. That 9 percent of the nation’s youth are hurt by dating partners every year is a serious public health concern, given that consequences of such violence can include depression, eating disorders, injury, and in the most severe cases, death, said Rothman, an associate professor of community health sciences at BUSPH.”While 9 percent may sound low, this figure puts dating violence on par with many of the other public health issues that we tend to view as serious problems, such as obesity, frequent cigarette smoking, or driving after drinking,” Rothman said. “The real concern here is that the rate has not gone down at all in the past 12 years, while the rate of physical fighting with peers has decreased significantly. That means that whatever headway we have made in reducing youth violence does not extend to people in dating or sexual relationships.”Malcolm Astley, father of Lauren Astley, who was murdered in Wayland, MA, by her boyfriend in July of 2011, said that the new study should serve as a wake-up call to parents and teachers around the nation.”Parents, teachers, counselors and legislators need to do everything they can to prevent dating abuse,” said Astley. “No other family or community should have to go through what we, and thousands of other families, have gone through.”I hope that 10 years from now, dating violence will be a much smaller issue. People facing break-ups should get the direction and education they need to handle their feelings.” Rothman said that several programs specifically geared to dating-violence prevention have been tested through randomized controlled trials and shown to be effective.”Our data support the idea that states and communities should invest in these types of prevention programs in order to try to address this problem,” she said.
