X-rays reveal inner structure of Earth’s ancient magma ocean

X-rays reveal inner structure of Earth’s ancient magma ocean Using the world’s most brilliant X-ray source, scientists have for the first time peered into molten magma at conditions of the deep Earth mantle. The analysis revealed that molten basalt changes its structure when exposed to pressure of up to 60 gigapascals. via ScienceDaily: Top Science News: Nov. 6, 2013 — Using the world’s most brilliant X-ray source, scientists have for the first time peered into molten magma at conditions of the deep Earth mantle. The analysis at DESY’s light source PETRA III revealed that molten basalt changes its structure when exposed to pressure of up to 60 gigapascals (GPa), corresponding to a depth of about 1400 kilometres below the surface. At such extreme conditions, the magma changes into a stiffer and denser form, the team around first author Chrystèle Sanloup from the University of Edinburgh reports in the scientific journal Nature. The findings support the concept that the early Earth’s mantle harboured two magma oceans, separated by a crystalline layer. Today, these presumed oceans have crystallised, but molten magma still exists in local patches and maybe thin layers in the mantle.”Silicate liquids like basaltic magma play a key role at all stages of deep Earth evolution, ranging from core and crust formation billions of years ago to volcanic activity today,” Sanloup emphasised. To investigate the behaviour of magma in the deep mantle, the researchers squeezed small pieces of basalt within a diamond anvil cell and applied up to roughly 600,000 times the standard atmospheric pressure. “But to investigate basaltic magma as it still exists in local patches within the Earth’s mantle, we first had to melt the samples,” explained co-author Zuzana Konôpková from DESY, who supported the experiments at the Extreme Conditions Beamline (ECB), P02 at PETRA III.The team used two strong infrared lasers that each concentrated a power of up to 40 Watts onto an area just 20 micrometres (millionths of a metre) across — that is about 2000 times the power density at the surface of the sun. A clever alignment of the laser optics allowed the team to shoot the heating lasers right through the diamond anvils. With this unique setup, the basalt samples could be heated up to 3,000 degrees Celsius in just a few seconds, until they were completely molten. … For more info: X-rays reveal inner structure of Earth’s ancient magma ocean ScienceDaily: Top Science News X-rays reveal inner structure of Earth’s ancient magma ocean L’articolo X-rays reveal inner structure of Earth’s ancient magma ocean sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

What I’m making right now

What I’m making right now …a baby hammock! Ivy isn’t sleeping well, and several readers suggested a spring-mounted baby hammock. From Dwell My first thought: “I can totally make that!” I have lots of fabric and wood on hand. I have power tools as well as a sewing machine. So I took a trip to the hardware store yesterday and bought a large carabiner, a large eye hook, a spring, a D-fastener, three spring links, and a few feet of chain. The fabric part is finished, and the wood support bar is cut and sanded. I’m waiting for some wood filler to dry (had an “oops–cut too far!” moment with the table saw). I’ve pinned several DIY tutorials here. I’m also putting away edamame and picking tomatoes today. I made sauerkraut last week, but it’s not quite fermented enough. Induced pluripotent stem cells reveal differences between humans and great apes

Induced pluripotent stem cells reveal differences between humans and great apes Researchers have, for the first time, taken chimpanzee and bonobo skin cells and turned them into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), a type of cell that has the ability to form any other cell or tissue in the body. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Oct. 23, 2013 — Researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have, for the first time, taken chimpanzee and bonobo skin cells and turned them into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), a type of cell that has the ability to form any other cell or tissue in the body.Mouse iPSCs were created in 2006 by Kazutoshi Takahashi and Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University in Japan, and human iPSCs soon followed — -feats which earned Yamanaka the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine last year. Now scientists regularly use iPSCs to model diseases using cells that would be otherwise difficult to obtain from a living person or animal. By adding a combination of four key factors, a skin cell can be made into an iPSC, which can then be coaxed into forming liver, lung and brain cells in a culture dish. It’s now possible to not only model disease using the cells, but also to compare iPSCs from humans to those of our closest living relatives — -great apes, with which we share a majority of genes — -for insight into what molecular and cellular features make us human.”Comparing human, chimpanzee and bonobo cells can give us clues to understand biological processes, such as infection, diseases, brain evolution, adaptation or genetic diversity,” says senior research associate Iñigo Narvaiza, who led the study with senior staff scientist Carol Marchetto at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. “Until now, the sources for chimpanzee and bonobo cells were limited to postmortem tissue or blood. Now you could generate neurons, for example, from the three different species and compare them to test hypotheses.”In the new study, published online October 23 in the journal Nature, scientists found disparities in the regulation of jumping genes or transposons — -DNA elements that can copy and paste themselves into spots throughout the genome — between humans and non-human primate cells. Jumping genes provide a means to rapidly shuffle DNA and might be shaping the evolution of our genomes, the scientists say.Working in the lab of Salk’s Fred Gage, the Vi and John Adler Chair for Research on Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disease, Narvaiza, Marchetto and their colleagues identified genes that are differentially expressed between iPSCs from humans and both chimpanzees and bonobos. To the group’s surprise, two of those genes code for proteins that restrict a jumping gene called long interspersed element-1or L1, for short. Compared with non-human primate cells, human iPSCs expressed higher levels of these restrictors, called APOBEC3B and PIWIL2. “We weren’t expecting that,” Marchetto says. “Those genes caught our eyes, so they were the first targets we focused on.”L1 and a handful of other jumping genes are abundant throughout our genomes. … For more info: Induced pluripotent stem cells reveal differences between humans and great apes ScienceDaily: Top Health News Induced pluripotent stem cells reveal differences between humans and great apes L’articolo Induced pluripotent stem cells reveal differences between humans and great apes sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

World ocean systems undermined by climate change by 2100 An ambitious new study describes the full chain of events by which ocean biogeochemical changes triggered by humanmade greenhouse gas emissions may cascade through marine habitats and organisms, penetrating to the deep ocean and eventually influencing humans. Factoring in predictable synergistic changes such as the depletion of dissolved oxygen in seawater and a decline in productivity of ocean ecosystems, no corner of the world ocean will be untouched by climate change by 2100. via ScienceDaily: Ecology News: Oct. 15, 2013 — An ambitious new study describes the full chain of events by which ocean biogeochemical changes triggered by humanmade greenhouse gas emissions may cascade through marine habitats and organisms, penetrating to the deep ocean and eventually influencing humans.Previous analyses have focused mainly on ocean warming and acidification, considerably underestimating the biological and social consequences of climate change. Factoring in predictable synergistic changes such as the depletion of dissolved oxygen in seawater and a decline in productivity of ocean ecosystems, the new study shows that no corner of the world ocean will be untouched by climate change by 2100.”When you look at the world ocean, there are few places that will be free of changes; most will suffer the simultaneous effects of warming, acidification, and reductions in oxygen and productivity,” said lead author Camilo Mora, assistant professor at the Department of Geography in the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UH Mānoa). “The consequences of these co-occurring changes are massive — everything from species survival, to abundance, to range size, to body size, to species richness, to ecosystem functioning are affected by changes in ocean biogeochemistry.”The human ramifications of these changes are likely to be massive and disruptive. Food chains, fishing, and tourism could all be impacted. The study shows that some 470 to 870 million of the world’s poorest people rely on the ocean for food, jobs, and revenues, and live in countries where ocean goods and services could be compromised by multiple ocean biogeochemical changes.Mora and Craig Smith with UH Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) worked with a 28-person international collaboration of climate modelers, biogeochemists, oceanographers, and social scientists to develop the study, which is due for publication October 15 in the scientific journal PLOS Biology. The researchers used the most recent and robust models of projected climate change developed for the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to inform their analysis. They quantified the extent of co-occurrence of changes in temperature, pH, oxygen, and primary productivity based on two scenarios: a business-as-usual scenario wherein atmospheric CO2 concentrations could reach 900 ppm by 2100, and an alternative scenario under which concentrations only reach 550 ppm by 2100 (representing a concerted, rapid CO2 mitigation effort, beginning today). They discovered that most of the world’s ocean surface will be simultaneously impacted by varying intensities of ocean warming, acidification, oxygen depletion, or shortfalls in productivity. Only a very small fraction of the oceans, mostly in polar regions, will face the opposing effects of increases in oxygen or productivity, and nowhere will there be cooling or pH increase.”Even the seemingly positive changes at high latitudes are not necessary beneficial. Invasive species have been immigrating to these areas due to changing ocean conditions and will threaten the local species and the humans who depend on them,” said co-author Chih-Lin Wei, a postdoctoral fellow at Ocean Science Centre, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. The researchers assembled global distribution maps of 32 marine habitats and biodiversity hotspots to assess their potential vulnerability to the changes. As a final step, they used available data on human dependency on ocean goods and services and social adaptability to estimate the vulnerability of coastal populations to the projected ocean biogeochemical changes.”Other studies have looked at small-scale impacts, but this is the first time that we’ve been able to look the entire world ocean and how co-occurring stressors will differentially impact the earth’s diverse habitats and people,” said co-author Andrew Thurber, a postdoctoral fellow at Oregon State University. … For more info: World ocean systems undermined by climate change by 2100 ScienceDaily: Ecology News World ocean systems undermined by climate change by 2100 L’articolo World ocean systems undermined by climate change by 2100 sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Up until now, we have discussed how an attorney represents his client by demanding compensation from the person who is at fault for the injuries. The attorney uses methods that include litigation, arbitration, or maybe just an intimidating demand letter. However, the methods change in situations where his client is an injured employee.Individual states and the federal government have specifically created laws that compensate persons who are injured while at work, and the laws do not focus much on blaming anyone for the injury. Instead, an employer must pay the compensation to his injured employee merely because the employee was injured while on the job. This is a bit of an overstatement of the rules, and there are exceptions, but it is generally true. The catch? Employees are not eligible to sue the employer in court for the injury. Instead, they must settle for what the workers’ compensation laws require the employer to pay.Employees can make these claims against their employers without an attorney. They usually must report their injury to a supervisor or personnel manager who then reviews their claim. … For more info: Workers’ Compensation: Injury During Employment The Personal Injury Blog – The Injury HelpLine Workers’ Compensation: Injury During Employment L’articolo Workers’ Compensation: Injury During Employment sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Hybrid cars are status symbol of sorts for seniors

Hybrid cars are status symbol of sorts for seniors Paying extra bucks to “go green” in a hybrid car may pay off in self-esteem and image for older drivers, as well as give a healthy boost to the environment. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Oct. 10, 2013 — Paying extra bucks to “go green” in a hybrid car may pay off in self-esteem and image for older drivers, as well as give a healthy boost to the environment, according to a Baylor University study. The finding is significant because some segments of the older-consumer population control a considerable share of the discretionary income in the United States, and the population size of the “mature market” is growing rapidly, researchers said. The study is published in the journal Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing and Service Industries.”If I want to pay $5 for a ‘green’ detergent or sponge, I’ll know that I’m helping the environment. But those things aren’t highly visible. Other people aren’t going to notice,” said Jay Yoo, Ph.D., an assistant professor of family and consumer sciences in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences.Researchers analyzed a national cross-sectional survey of 314 consumers age 60 and older who had bought hybrid cars. The study showed that their satisfaction was influenced by social values — including pride and prestige — as well as quality and price, not only in vehicle purchase but in future savings on gasoline expenses. Those three variables — social value, price and quality –are significant in enhancing senior citizens’ customer loyalty as shown by repurchase intention and positive word-of-mouth, Yoo said. Emotional values — such as excitement — did not significantly influence their purchase intention or satisfaction, according to the study.”The findings suggest that elderly consumers are concerned about how they appear to others when driving a hybrid car,” the researchers wrote. “They believe that driving a hybrid car builds a positive self-image of the people who drive them.””This knowledge can help as a marketing tool,” Yoo said. “Hybrid cars have increased in visibility because of their environmental consciousness. So people may be willing to pay an extra $5,000 or so in order to think, ‘I’m great, and this is good for the environment.’”Previous research has shown that older consumers are more inclined to behave in a pro-environment way than younger generations are, Yoo said.
