A happy patient is well connected to a doctor

A happy patient is well connected to a doctor The happiest patients are those who have regular contact with their doctors. A study finds that patients who have established “continuity of care” with primary-care physician are most satisfied with their treatment. The study comes as the American health care system moves to a more team-based approach to care, known as patient-centered medical home. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Nov. 18, 2013 — A new trend in American health care is the patient-centered medical home. The approach revolves around a team of medical and health professionals who, working together, treat an individual, led by a primary-care physician who orchestrates the whole effort. The goal is the team knows everything about the patient, no matter how disparate the symptoms — from the earache last night to the long history of high cholesterol — and works together to treat the individual in a holistic way.Patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) have gained popularity since the National Committee on Quality Assurance recognized them five years ago. There are more than 1,500 such practices recognized by the nonprofit health quality association.Yet despite their growing popularity, questions remain about their effectiveness. In a new study, researchers at the University of Iowa evaluated a similar model being tested with military veterans, and conclude that maintaining a direct, regular channel of communication between the patient and the primary doctor is critical to success.”This is a time of intense change in health care, and all of these aspects (with PCMHs) potentially contribute to more fragmentation,” says David Katz, associate professor in internal medicine at the UI and the corresponding author on the study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. “That’s why we can’t lose sight of the doctor-patient relationship, and how we’re communicating with our physicians.”Katz and his colleagues surveyed 4,393 veterans receiving care in medical facilities in the upper Midwest run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to evaluate their thoughts on the VA’s Patient Aligned Care Team initiative, an approach to care much like the PCMH. The veterans needed to have at least three primary-care visits during the survey period, which lasted from 2009 to 2010.In particular, the researchers sought to better understand whether continuity of care — measured by the concentration of visits with a primary-care physician and the duration of care with that physician — led to a patient feeling more satisfied with his or her relationship with the primary doctor. The research team found that it did, mainly because continuity of care seems to yield better communication between the individual and the primary-care doctor and thus a happier patient overall.”I think that’s a very simple implication of this study,” Katz says, “in the sense that it can improve the connectedness of the patient and improve the quality of the doctor-patient communication and the patient’s satisfaction with their care.”The researchers found that the surveyed VA patients reported seeing their assigned care provider 80 percent of the time, higher than anticipated and comparable with rates in the private sector. Yet only half rated as “excellent” their involvement with a primary physician in making a treatment decision in the past year.Katz noted that several factors could influence the rating, such as if a patient had an acute problem that needed immediate treatment, reducing the time available for an involved discussion. … For more info: A happy patient is well connected to a doctor ScienceDaily: Living Well News A happy patient is well connected to a doctor L’articolo A happy patient is well connected to a doctor sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

What Millennials Think about Life Insurance

What Millennials Think about Life Insurance In 2012, Guardian Life Insurance, with the assistance of Learnvest, conducted a survey of 797 male and females, 21-40 years of age with annual household incomes over $30,000 to look at the attitudes and behaviors of those in this age group toward life and disability insurance, two products which Guardian has been an industry leader for years.  We addressed the findings about disability insurance our disability insurance site ProtectYourIncome.com and will address the findings about life insurance here on LifeInsure.com. They Understand the Need Most of the respondents understand, in theory, how important life insurance is and they are also aware of their own financial responsibilities, such as student loans and credit card debt.  Those who have others that depend on them understand their responsibility they have to provide for them in the event of their death.  The primary person they feel responsible for is their spouse or domestic partner – 60 percent of respondents named their partner as beneficiary of their life insurance policy; almost a third named their children. The Coverage Gap While a majority of those surveyed wanted to do the right thing by their dependents, the majority of them miscalculate how much life insurance they actually needed to “make all their dependents’ troubles go away.  When asked what that figure would be, the average answer was one million dollars.  When asked how much their life insurance policies would cover, the average answer was about $390,000. As you can see, that leaves a huge gap  ($610,000) between what is assumed to be needed and what will actually be available to the family  in the case of the death.  This discrepancy may be due in part to the belief by many that life insurance obtained through work is sufficient to take care of the family if the breadwinner is no longer around.  Sixty five of those surveyed get their life insurance through their employers.  While we agree that this is a good starting point, it’s quite obvious that this leaves most people under-insured. The Information Gap Part of this coverage gap can be due to the fact that people in this group (like many others) don’t really know where to turn for information.  The majority of respondents turn to their friends and family for information about life insurance and, unfortunately, this isn’t always the best source about the subject.  The good news for Millennials is that the Internet, which this group has embraced more than any other, has become a great learning ground for  life insurance, as well as other financial matters.  My suggestion to this group is to embrace the technology available to them to learn about and even apply for life insurance policies.   Some websites (like LifeInsure.com) will let you get all the life insurance quotes you need to make a good decision, without you having to speak to an agent. So, go learn, figure out how much you really need, get quotes, and fill that gap with a new policy. Original article: What Millennials Think about Life Insurance ©2013 LifeInsure.com. We call that process learning, and it enables the kind of rapid, highly efficient computational processes that put Siri and Blue Gene to shame.Materials scientists at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have now created a new type of transistor that mimics the behavior of a synapse. The novel device simultaneously modulates the flow of information in a circuit and physically adapts to changing signals.Exploiting unusual properties in modern materials, the synaptic transistor could mark the beginning of a new kind of artificial intelligence: one embedded not in smart algorithms but in the very architecture of a computer. The findings appear in Nature Communications.”There’s extraordinary interest in building energy-efficient electronics these days,” says principal investigator Shriram Ramanathan, associate professor of materials science at Harvard SEAS. “Historically, people have been focused on speed, but with speed comes the penalty of power dissipation. With electronics becoming more and more powerful and ubiquitous, you could have a huge impact by cutting down the amount of energy they consume.”The human mind, for all its phenomenal computing power, runs on roughly 20 Watts of energy (less than a household light bulb), so it offers a natural model for engineers.”The transistor we’ve demonstrated is really an analog to the synapse in our brains,” says co-lead author Jian Shi, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS. “Each time a neuron initiates an action and another neuron reacts, the synapse between them increases the strength of its connection. And the faster the neurons spike each time, the stronger the synaptic connection. Essentially, it memorizes the action between the neurons.”In principle, a system integrating millions of tiny synaptic transistors and neuron terminals could take parallel computing into a new era of ultra-efficient high performance. While calcium ions and receptors effect a change in a biological synapse, the artificial version achieves the same plasticity with oxygen ions. … For more info: Synaptic transistor learns while it computes ScienceDaily: Top Science News Synaptic transistor learns while it computes L’articolo Synaptic transistor learns while it computes sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Could a Milky Way supernova be visible from Earth in next 50 years?

Could a Milky Way supernova be visible from Earth in next 50 years? Astronomers have calculated the odds that, sometime during the next 50 years, a supernova occurring in our home galaxy will be visible from Earth. The good news: they’ve calculated the odds to be nearly 100 percent that such a supernova would be visible to telescopes in the form of infrared radiation. The bad news: the odds are much lower — dipping to 20 percent or less — that the shining stellar spectacle would be visible to the naked eye in the nighttime sky. via ScienceDaily: Top Science News: Oct. 31, 2013 — Astronomers at The Ohio State University have calculated the odds that, sometime during the next 50 years, a supernova occurring in our home galaxy will be visible from Earth. The good news: they’ve calculated the odds to be nearly 100 percent that such a supernova would be visible to telescopes in the form of infrared radiation. The bad news: the odds are much lower — dipping to 20 percent or less — that the shining stellar spectacle would be visible to the naked eye in the nighttime sky.Yet, all this is great news to astronomers, who, unlike the rest of us, have high-powered infrared cameras to point at the sky at a moment’s notice. For them, this study suggests that they have a solid chance of doing something that’s never been done before: detect a supernova fast enough to witness what happens at the very beginning of a star’s demise. A massive star “goes supernova” at the moment when it’s used up all its nuclear fuel and its core collapses, just before it explodes violently and throws off most of its mass into space.”We see all these stars go supernova in other galaxies, and we don’t fully understand how it happens. We think we know, we say we know, but that’s not actually 100 percent true,” said Christopher Kochanek, professor of astronomy at Ohio State and the Ohio Eminent Scholar in Observational Cosmology. “Today, technologies have advanced to the point that we can learn enormously more about supernovae if we can catch the next one in our galaxy and study it with all our available tools.”The results will appear in an upcoming issue of The Astrophysical Journal.First through calculations and then through computer models, generations of astronomers have worked out the physics of supernovae based on all available data, and today’s best models appear to match what they see in the skies. But actually witnessing a supernova — that is, for instance, actually measuring the changes in infrared radiation from start to finish while one was happening — could prove or disprove those ideas.Kochanek explained how technology is making the study of Milky Way supernovae possible. Astronomers now have sensitive detectors for neutrinos (particles emitted from the core of a collapsing star) and gravitational waves (created by the vibrations of the star’s core) which can find any supernova occurring in our galaxy. The question is whether we can actually see light from the supernova because we live in a galaxy filled with dust — soot particles that Kochanek likened to those seen in diesel truck exhaust — that absorb the light and might hide a supernova from our view.”Every few days, we have the chance to observe supernovae happening outside of our galaxy,” said doctoral student Scott Adams. “But there’s only so much you can learn from those, whereas a galactic supernova would show us so much more. … For more info: Could a Milky Way supernova be visible from Earth in next 50 years? The dawn of male equality in Europe

The dawn of male equality in Europe A fumbling men’s movement is dawning in Europe, there is a widespread concern about boys’ academic performance in school, and child custody and breakups are controversial issues. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Oct. 29, 2013 — A fumbling men’s movement is dawning in Europe, there is a widespread concern about boys’ academic performance in school, and child custody and breakups are controversial issues.”It was surprising to see that the discussion concerning boys’ role as academic losers in school was found in all the countries covered by this study,” says Elli Scambor who is one of the near forty scholars who have participated in the EU report The role of men in gender equality.”And the school as a feminized institution was identified as the main problem.”Although research shows that more boys than girls drop out of school and that their academic performance is slightly poorer than the girls’, it also shows that class and migration background is as important as gender when one tries to explain these differences.Men as genderThe report was assigned by the European Commission, and it forms the basis for a number of policy recommendations. The study has collected and compared statistics, research and the political development concerning men and equality in 27 EU countries and the four EFTA countries — among them Norway.”Homophobia, child custody and violence were all controversial themes. It was much easier to talk about work, health and active fathers,” says Scambor.”The EU commissioners come from a long tradition in which equality work during the last decades have first and foremost been focusing on women. They had to get used to the idea that men is also a gender.”For instance, the commissioners had to be reminded by the researchers of the fact that violence does not only mean men’s violence against women, but also violence executed between and against men. And the fact that one cannot carry out research on masculinity without addressing homophobia.”Some controversial themes were not fully addressed,” says Øystein Gullvåg Holter, who is responsible for the Norwegian contribution to the report. He would like to see more research on child custody following breakups, among other things. However, this is the first time that men’s situation has been summarized on such a wide basis, especially in terms of work, family, care and health. The fact that this has been put on the agenda in Europe is both new and important.Europe dividedOne of the things that surprised Holter was the variation in terms of men’s participation in unpaid care services and housework.”It is almost like a divided Europe where the north and west have reached the furthest and the east and south are lagging behind,” says the researcher.By way of example, men from Northern and Western Europe are twice as involved in housework compared to men from Southern and Eastern Europe. But Holter was also surprised to see that many of the political measures that we regard as being Norwegian or Nordic here in Norway — such as the paternity leave — may be found in several European countries.”What used to be called a Norwegian or Nordic model is now gradually turning into a European model,” claims Holter.Male movementsThe report concludes that men in general are not particularly involved in gender equality work. Those who are involved in this kind of work are termed pioneers in the report. And here, too, there are geographical divisions: the Northern and Western European countries have a longer tradition when it comes to gender equality work; they have taken more institutional measures such as men’s panels or men’s directorates which consequently makes more men involved in this sort of work. However, the researchers found signs of dawning male movements in all the 31 countries which have been examined; England and Sweden are in the lead, each having 24 male organizations.”Many of them focus on child custody after breakups, on boys as losers in the education system and on the influence of feminism on men,” says Scambor. The pros and cons of masculinityThe researchers have applied the American sociologist Michael Alan Messner’s triangle model as their theoretical approach for evaluating male policy. According to Messner, a male organization has to cover all three angles in the triangle in order to be progressive: variations between men, men’s privileges, and men’s disadvantages.”The most unbalanced organizations were in Eastern Europe,” says Scambor.Progressive men in these countries were often involved in feminist organizations.”But not all the organizations which work for fathers’ rights are unbalanced,” says the researcher.”We found organizations working for fathers’ rights in many countries and they vary from being highly progressive to being very misogynous and anti-feminist.From provider to fatherAccording to the report, the man as provider is no longer the dominating ideal in Europe. … For more info: The dawn of male equality in Europe ScienceDaily: Living Well News The dawn of male equality in Europe L’articolo The dawn of male equality in Europe sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Unemployment makes women more likely to be victims of crime

Unemployment makes women more likely to be victims of crime Crime and unemployment are linked, but not always in the ways we think they are. It is now clear that in some circumstances female unemployment – rather than unemployment as a whole – makes the biggest difference to rates of violent and property crimes. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Oct. 24, 2013 — Crime and unemployment are linked, but not always in the ways we think they are. Thanks to the work of three UK researchers, it’s now clear that in some circumstances female unemployment — rather than unemployment as a whole — makes the biggest difference to rates of violent and property crimes.Writing in the journal Applied Economics, Steve Cook and Duncan Watson (both from the University of Wales Swansea) and Louise Parker (from the University of East Anglia) take a closer look at two ways that unemployment impacts on crime: the ‘opportunity’ effect (a strong economy means more goods worth stealing, and fewer people sat at home to guard them) and the ‘motivation’ effect (a weak economy widens perceived differences between lifestyles and can tempt some into crime). After crunching data gathered from the US Bureau of Labor and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics, the team analysed them further for gender effects. Their most important finding was that female unemployment but not male unemployment showed ‘significant opportunity effects for aggregate violent crime, aggregate property crime and components of violent crime.’ In other words, high female unemployment means a higher likelihood of higher crime rates.Contrary to the expectations of previous studies, the opportunity effects here are counter-cyclical. Their results did not support the traditional ‘latchkey’ theory that high female employment increases crime because women were working rather than looking after their children.Their results also did not support the idea that by challenging gender roles, female employment contributes to an increase in crime, especially domestic violence.Instead, their results supported a ‘victimisation’ thesis. High levels of female unemployment translate into high numbers of women without the means to escape situations where they are likely to experience crime. With its innovative approach to examining the relationship between unemployment and crime, this study provides an important insight into yet another distressing consequence of a weak economy, for women in particular.New evidence on the importance of gender and asymmetry in the crime-unemployment relationship Steve Cook, Duncan Watson & Louise Parker Applied Economic For more info: Unemployment makes women more likely to be victims of crime ScienceDaily: Living Well News Unemployment makes women more likely to be victims of crime L’articolo Unemployment makes women more likely to be victims of crime sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Unregulated, agricultural ammonia threatens U.S. national parks’ ecology

Unregulated, agricultural ammonia threatens U.S. national parks’ ecology Thirty-eight U.S. national parks are experiencing “accidental fertilization” at or above a critical threshold for ecological damage, according to a new study. Unless significant controls on ammonia emissions are introduced at a national level, they say, little improvement is likely between now and 2050. via ScienceDaily: Agriculture and Food News: Oct. 10, 2013 — Thirty-eight U.S. national parks are experiencing “accidental fertilization” at or above a critical threshold for ecological damage, according to a study published in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physicsand led by Harvard University researchers. Unless significant controls on ammonia emissions are introduced at a national level, they say, little improvement is likely between now and 2050.The environmental scientists, experts in air quality, atmospheric chemistry, and ecology, have been studying the fate of nitrogen-based compounds that are blown into natural areas from power plants, automobile exhaust, and — increasingly — industrial agriculture. Nitrogen that finds its way into natural ecosystems can disrupt the cycling of nutrients in soil, promote algal overgrowth and lower the pH of water in aquatic environments, and ultimately decrease the number of species that can survive.”The vast majority, 85 percent, of nitrogen deposition originates with human activities,” explains principal investigator Daniel J. Dodge SRT Viper

Dodge SRT Viper Dodge SRT Viper via design42day » Search Results » digital+art: | The all-new 2013 SRT® Viper was unveiled to the world today at the New York International Auto Show, marking its highly anticipated return to the high-performance sports car market. The fifth generation of the iconic two-seat, American-built supercar has been deliberately evolved to incorporate superior craftsmanship, a host of new technologies and ergonomic improvements while respecting its visceral legacy of outright performance. “After a gut-wrenching period of uncertainty, the Street and Racing Technology brand team is extremely proud that our hand-built in Detroit, flagship supercar is back and ready to take on the performance car world,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “Beyond being the flagship for the new SRT brand, the launch of the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would not let the performance icon of the Chrysler Group die. Willed to live on by a very special group of performance enthusiasts inside the company and across Viper Nation, this SRT team under our new leadership was challenged to not just continue the legendary Viper, but to create a world-class supercar that would showcase the very best we have to offer.” Two new models for any performance buyer For the 2013 model year, two new models of the iconic supercar will be hand built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit – the home for Viper since 1995. Both SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS models offer new interior and exterior designs incorporating premium materials and new exterior surfaces with aerodynamically functional details that are beautifully integrated into the high-tech carbon fiber and aluminum skin. On the inside, designers and engineers strived to rethink all touch points; and upgrade all material appointments and technologies. “The SRT Viper model is meant to offer a perfect blend of extreme performance and a deliberate preservation of what has become the iconic DNA of the Viper,” Gilles added. “We strove to deliver a supercar that continues to bring the driver as close as possible to the machine.” The SRT Viper GTS builds on the DNA of the SRT Viper model with more technologically advanced solutions, like two-mode active suspension, to allow this world-class GTS to find new limits on the track while also opening up its envelope as a more premium and mature evolution of the classic, extreme performance formula. Designed and built with premium features and materials inside and out, the Viper GTS will compete with the best performance vehicles in the world with a wide range of creature comforts, advanced drivetrain and interior technologies. “We’ve purposely evolved the iconic soul and raw performance formula that Viper has maintained over the years,” Gilles said. “Our returning customers will see the world-class levels of pride, quality and hand craftsmanship built into the 2013 Viper. With two price classes of the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS, we have offerings for both the traditional core Viper customer and for the new customer who wants the same performance in a package with more technology and premium creature comforts.” Awe-inspiring V-10 powertrain At the heart and soul of the 2013 SRT Viper is the venerable, hand-assembled 8.4-liter all-aluminum, V-10 overhead-valve engine. Improvements for 2013 include a new, ultra-high flow and lightweight composite intake manifold, high-strength forged pistons, sodium-filled exhaust valves, new catalysts to reduce back pressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses. More than 25 pounds has been shaved from the fully dressed engine. Preliminary performance ratings for the SRT-engineered V-10 Viper are 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated engine in the world. The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission has been improved with a shorter throw shifter, closer gear ratios and a final drive ratio that has been shortened to 3.55 from 3.07. The 2013 Viper models will be more engaging to drive and top speed is now achieved through 6th gear with maximum engine speed (redline) at 6,200 rpm. Outstanding ride, handling and capability Starting with a stiffer structure that provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity, the chassis of the 2013 SRT Viper benefits from numerous enhancements – many learned through racing efforts with Viper GTS-R and Competition Coupe models. Major updates include the addition of a new aluminum “X” brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting and contributes to improved torsional rigidity and stiffness. A new aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to overall mass savings and improved weight distribution while providing excellent crashworthiness. Structurally, many areas of the chassis were reworked to take advantage of new materials, reduce thickness in some areas and reshape components for more structural rigidity in others. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 100 pounds. At the rear, the suspension has been re-engineered with the toe link moved forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability. A new, driver selectable two-mode suspension system, featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with both street and track settings, is standard on GTS models. For 2013, SRT Viper models ride on standard Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires with substantially improved overall performance, cold weather performance, enhanced overall grip and steering response on a variety of road surfaces while also broadening the performance envelope. An optional SRT Track Package features Pirelli P Zero Corsa, “soft”-tuned, “racing-type” compound tires that improve handling and precision further on the road or the race track. For the first time, standard safety technologies such as electronic stability control and traction control help to maximize traction performance at virtually any speed and driving environment. All 2013 Viper models will come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch control switch, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts. Benchmark braking Stopping performance for the 2013 SRT Viper is engineered to provide shorter stopping distances, better modulation, improved durability and balanced brake performance without fading under extreme conditions. Four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers, and vented rotors with a diameter of 355 mm by 32 mm, are used at all four corners. Brake calipers are forged and weight optimized by fully machining all surfaces. The calipers are among the stiffest available with distortion from heat nearly eliminated even under the most demanding braking conditions. The available SRT Track Package features lightweight and slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech. New premium materials, craftsmanship and technologies The all-new, driver-oriented interior cabins of the SRT Viper models have been totally revamped for 2013 with superior craftsmanship, premium material appointments and performance-oriented technologies. For the first time, all major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas. On the Viper GTS model, all surfaces are fully leather skinned, and standard accent colors are applied to the seats, doors, center console and stitching. Quality fit and finish across the lineup is showcased by triple-paint-finished Gun Metal appliqués on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle on the center console. Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight Kevlar/fiberglass shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Both driver and passenger enjoy improved comfort from thigh support and deep side bolsters designed to match the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of the SRT Viper. Seating position in the 2013 SRT Viper models is 20 mm lower for more room and enhanced performance-driving ergonomics. Seat travel is extended by 90 mm overall, which enables expanded seating options from a more rearward positioned bulkhead. For the first time, seat height can be adjusted by up to 40 mm – manually on the SRT model and power controlled on the GTS. The new 2013 Viper is the most spacious model in the history of the nameplate. The floor pan and bulkhead have been extended approximately 90 mm to provide improved legroom and more rearward seat track movement. Designed specifically for the 2013 SRT Viper, the new 7-inch, full-color, customizable instrument cluster display uses a full-time analog tachometer readout in the center to confirm the performance driving feedback philosophy of the Viper. Drivers have a wide range of custom and personal options such as an additional digital speedometer readout just below the tachometer. The vehicle information is clearly communicated with easy-to-understand icons. Intuitively controlled through a simple four-way steering-wheel control, the driver can configure the screens to display the information they desire, easily mixing and matching information. Uconnect® Access provides new level of connectivity The 2013 SRT Viper lineup includes the new, next generation Uconnect® Access in-vehicle connectivity system that provides drivers with access to more information, emergency services, more entertainment and improved graphics. Viper customers can choose between two Uconnect Media Centers, RA3 and RA4, which provide a range of new features and multiple ways to control media in the vehicle. The system includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen along with a set of hard keys for commonly used functions, including traditional knobs for tuning the radio bands and radio volume. Touchscreen buttons along the bottom of the screen allow drivers to easily access the radio, climate controls, navigation, phone, and new, select, certified applications. The new, highly sculpted steering wheel has a host of finger-tip mounted controls for audio, Uconnect, cruise control (first application) and launch control. SiriusXM Travel Link also is available with Uconnect, providing premium data services and information to make every trip more efficient. SiriusXM Traffic works with the vehicle’s navigation system to display traffic speed and traffic flow information along with accident information to assist drivers in routing around congested areas. An expanded SiriusXM channel lineup includes exclusive programming, including the new SiriusXM Latino channels, an auto industry first. A range of Harman Kardon® surround-sound systems are available across the SRT Viper lineup that feature the latest in audio system technology. All Harman Kardon audio systems include a high-voltage class D amplifier with tracking power supply and up to 11 channels of amplification. The Harman Kardon system with exclusive Logic 7 surround-sound processing is available in the Viper GTS model with a total of 18-speakers, including four subwoofers located behind the seats. All Harman Kardon systems in the 2013 SRT Viper lineup include high-performance, high-efficiency GreenEdge technology loudspeakers that are extremely light and include rare earth magnets. The magnets inside each speaker ensure efficient speaker operation and enhanced performance. The audio systems operate on 32 volts – so the new and improved sound system achieves more than double the acoustic power of the current system. Refined evolution of SRT’s hallmark – aggressive and functional exterior designs The all-new, timeless exterior design blends contemporary execution with evolutionary refinement. All-new carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels are firsts for SRT Viper models resulting in significant weight reduction, improved high-speed stability and a slippery .364 drag coefficient. The forward-hinged hood carries the redesigned Viper badge – aptly named “Stryker” by the Viper Club of America – positioned in the center; and offers unobtrusive access to several service points and the SRT-engineered V-10 powerplant. The classical low-stance and the extreme cab rearward proportions that have become the unmistakable silhouette of the iconic supercar, return on the 2013 SRT Viper models along with the dramatic fender “gills” – another traditional Viper design cue that helps to extract heat from the engine compartment. The 2013 Viper models feature a contemporary take on the traditional “double-bubble” roof configuration that maximizes headroom for the driver and passenger while maintaining a low frontal area – allowing additional room for helmets during recreational competitive driving. Dual-function, bi-xenon projector headlamps are tightly packaged with white light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and LED turn signals in a sinister “snake eye” configuration. Functional “blisters” incorporated into the 70 mm projector headlamp lenses create a three-dimensional view that gives Viper a distinctive glare. The lower-front grille is purposefully designed as an evolution of the traditional Viper low-profile cooling opening configuration and discretely carries a refined V-shape structure. The exhaust system continues to exit forward of the rear wheels and now carries further refinement with cast aluminum, sill-mounted exhaust bezels. For the first time, the 2013 SRT Viper models carry LED taillamps that integrate stop-and-turn illumination in one element. Snakeskin texture in the lens carries the surface work seen in the gills and hood textures. With dark-masked lenses, the horizontal lamps appear dark until the LED elements fire. Each lamp carries 50 LEDs that provide a unified “crystallized” illumination effect. The five-spoke, forged-aluminum “Rattler” wheel design on the 2013 Viper model is available with fully polished (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black finishes. The Viper GTS has a split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design with three available finishes, including polished face with graphite-painted pockets (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black. Available SRT Track Package wheels are ultra-lightweight, track-ready wheels in Hyper Black or matte black finishes. About SRT The Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand uses a successful product development formula featuring five proven hallmarks: awe-inspiring powertrains; outstanding ride, handling and capability; benchmark braking; aggressive and functional exteriors and race-inspired and high-performance interiors to remain true to its performance roots. Tiny bottles and melting corks: Temperature regulates a new delivery system for drugs and fragrances

Tiny bottles and melting corks: Temperature regulates a new delivery system for drugs and fragrances Microscopic, bottle-like structures with corks that melt at precisely-controlled temperatures could potentially release drugs inside the body or fragrances onto the skin, according to a recently published study. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Sep. 18, 2013 — Microscopic, bottle-like structures with corks that melt at precisely-controlled temperatures could potentially release drugs inside the body or fragrances onto the skin, according to a recently published study.Typical drug delivery systems act more like sponges than bottles. For example, drugs are absorbed into polymer particles and then allowed to diffuse out over time. The researchers hope that the new system may allow for greater control of drug delivery. Cargo would stay inside the hollow polymer particle when plugged with a solid cork. When the cork is melted by body heat, the drugs would quickly flow out of the particle bottle.”It’s just like when you open wine, you remove the cork,” said Younan Xia, a professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University. Xia also holds joint appointments in School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Tech. The melting corks are made of fatty acids, derived from natural oils and fats. The length of the hydrocarbon chains on these molecules can be made longer or shorter to increase or decrease, respectively, the temperature at which they melt. This way, the fragrances in deodorants, for example, would be released only when a person gets hot and sweaty. The new system for temperature-regulated release was detailed in a recent online edition of the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition. … For more info: Tiny bottles and melting corks: Temperature regulates a new delivery system for drugs and fragrances ScienceDaily: Top Health News Tiny bottles and melting corks: Temperature regulates a new delivery system for drugs and fragrances L’articolo Tiny bottles and melting corks: Temperature regulates a new delivery system for drugs and fragrances sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Wordplay persuades for customer reviews of truffles, but not laundry detergent Ads or consumer reviews that use metaphors and wordplay can be effective, but it depends on the product, according to a new study. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Sep. 10, 2013 — Ads or consumer reviews that use metaphors and wordplay can be effective, but it depends on the product, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.”The use of figurative language in advertising (such as metaphor or word play) has a generally positive effect on attitudes toward the ad and the product,” write authors Ann Kronrod (Michigan State University) and Shai Danziger (Tel Aviv University). “But today, much of the information consumers get about a product comes from reviews written by other consumers. Does the effect of figurative language on attitudes remain generally positive when used in consumer reviews?”Not always, according to the authors, who found that consumer reviews of products that relate to pleasure (hedonic products) are more likely to use figurative or emotional language than reviews that describe utilitarian products. So, for example, a consumer review of ice cream would use more figurative language than a review of a bank. This is true even for products that have both hedonic and utilitarian uses. In one experiment, participants used liquid soap to either wash a dirty spoon (utilitarian use) or blow bubbles (hedonic use). The participants who blew bubbles used more figurative language when they described their experiences.Other experiments found that responses to figurative language depend on the source. An experiment showed that consumer attitudes shifted depending on whether the language was used in a review or an ad. “When the same product description was defined as an ad and not as a review, figurative language in the description elevated the attitudes towards the product — for both hedonic and utilitarian products,” the authors write.”Consumer word of mouth is one of the most important sources of influence on decisions,” the authors explain. So understanding how the use of language affects the reader can help reviewers know how the public reacts to their messages. … For more info: Wordplay persuades for customer reviews of truffles, but not laundry detergent ScienceDaily: Living Well News Wordplay persuades for customer reviews of truffles, but not laundry detergent L’articolo Wordplay persuades for customer reviews of truffles, but not laundry detergent sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Diets low in polyunsaturated fatty acids may be a problem for youngsters

Diets low in polyunsaturated fatty acids may be a problem for youngsters In the first study to closely examine the polyunsaturated fatty acid intake among US children under the age of five, researchers have found what might be a troubling deficit in the diet of many youngsters. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News: Sep. 13, 2013 — In the first study to closely examine the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake among U.S. children under the age of 5, Sarah Keim, PhD, principal investigator in the Center for Biobehavioral Health at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, has found what might be a troubling deficit in the diet of many youngsters. The study, published online today by Maternal and Child Nutrition, used data on nearly 2500 children age 12 to 60 months from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.PUFAs are essential to human health. A proper ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 PUFAs plays an important role in cell function, inflammation, eye development and neural functioning. However, the ideal dietary intake of PUFAs for young children is unclear. Knowing that infants often receive significant amounts of key PUFAs through breast milk and infant formula during the first year of life, Dr. Keim and her colleague, Amy Branum, PhD, MSPH, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, decided to estimate the average intake of PUFAs in the diet for children between infancy and kindergarten.”The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 intake was high — about 10. Some experts use this as an indicator of diet quality, with a high ratio being less healthy,” says Dr. … For more info: Diets low in polyunsaturated fatty acids may be a problem for youngsters ScienceDaily: Top Health News Diets low in polyunsaturated fatty acids may be a problem for youngsters L’articolo Diets low in polyunsaturated fatty acids may be a problem for youngsters sembra essere il primo su My Biologica.

Eco-friendly bamboo garments lure consumers – if the price is right

Eco-friendly bamboo garments lure consumers – if the price is right Consumers who plan to buy eco-friendly bamboo apparel are attracted if the price is right, but their next consideration is the product’s novelty, according to a new study by Baylor University researchers. via ScienceDaily: Living Well News: Sep. 13, 2013 — Consumers who plan to buy eco-friendly bamboo apparel are attracted if the price is right, but their next consideration is the product’s novelty, according to a new study by Baylor University researchers.Bamboo has been championed by many as friendly to the environment, although the Federal Trade Commission issued a 2009 consumer alert noting that some pollutants are released in production from bamboo stalks. When it comes to product consumption in general, consumers are influenced by emotion, price, functionality, social image and curiosity, said lead researcher Jay Yoo, Ph.D., an assistant professor of family and consumer sciences in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences. In the case of bamboo, “if I have it and you don’t, there’s novelty — and curiosity can make something more appealing,” Yoo said. The study, based on an online questionnaire of 122 participants, is published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education. The University of Minnesota’s department of design, housing and apparel was co-researcher.Social considerations — such as whether bamboo reflects social status — and function, such as whether bamboo wrinkles easily, had the least bearing on whether participants planned to buy it, the study showed.Meanwhile, when it comes to buying “green,” consumers who believe that one individual can make even a small difference in impacting the environment were more likely to buy bamboo. From an environmental standpoint, bamboo is touted as a product for the same reasons it is vilified by anyone who has tried to eradicate it from a yard: It is renewable, shooting to maturity in a mere four years, boasting a vast root system and clinging tenaciously even to steep hills, Yoo said. While the fashion industry seeks to earn profits, it is increasingly trying to do so in ways that do not harm the environment, such as using organic or recyclable materials, he said. From the industry’s standpoint, bamboo is desirable because it dyes well, feels silkier than cotton and is less expensive than silk.Producers of bamboo textiles maintain their products are antimicrobial, processed without chemicals, non-pollutant, biodegradable and recyclable.Yoo noted that the majority — nearly 84 percent — of those participating in the study were female college students with an average age of 21. He said further research of a wider sample should be done. Mesothelioma: What is – Types – Evolution – Symptoms

Mesothelioma: What is? The mesothelium is a tissue that lines, such as a thin film, the inner wall of the chest and abdomen and the space around the heart. This membrane is also of most of the internal organs and protects them thanks to the production of a particular liquid lubricant that facilitates the movements. The mesothelium takes on different names depending on the area that covers: in the chest is called the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium in the abdomen in the space around the heart. The tumor that arises from the cells of the mesothelium (mesothelial cells) is called mesothelioma and can originate in 4 areas of the body: in the chest, abdomen, and, very rarely, in the cavity around the heart and the membrane that covers the testicles. From the mesothelium can also be established benign tumors (tumors adenomatoidi, benign cystic mesothelioma, etc.) that are usually removed surgically and do not require further treatment. Mesothelioma: types Depending on the area of the body in which they originate, mesotheliomas are divided into: Pleural mesothelioma: born in the chest cavity and represents the most common type (about 3 out of 4 cases); Peritoneal mesothelioma: born in the abdomen and is almost totalià remained excluding those pleural mesothelioma; Pericardial Mesothelioma: born in the cavity around the heart and is extremely rare; Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis: born from the membrane that covers the testicles and is very rare. If one takes into consideration the type of malignant cell in the tumor, there are three types of mesothelioma: Epithelioid the most common (60-70% of cases) and the one that tends to have a better prognosis; Sarcomatoid (or fibrous): This represents 10-20% of mesotheliomas; Mixed (or biphasic): areas with epithelioid and sarcomatoid areas, representing 30-40% of mesotheliomas. Mesothelioma: evolution Determine the stage of the tumor, or as the disease spread, it is essential to decide the type of therapy. For mesothelioma are identified 4 stages based on the TNM criteria that take into account the size of the tumor (T), the possible involvement of lymph nodes (N) and metastasis (M). As for the majority of tumors, also for mesothelioma is the stage less the greater the probability of success of the treatment, although often the diagnosis of this tumor comes when the disease has already exceeded the initial stages and it is difficult to treat. Mesothelioma: symptoms The symptoms of mesothelioma are initially very little specific and often are ignored or interpreted as signs of other diseases more common and less severe. Early signs of pleural mesothelioma may include pain in the lower back or side of the chest, shortness of breath, cough, fever, fatigue, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness. Abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea and vomiting are the most common symptoms in the case of peritoneal mesothelioma. Nearly 325,000 designers attended the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (International exhibition of furniture) April 9-14. It was a great opportunity to explore new installations and design as well as mingle with colleagues visiting from around the world. A few things kept surfacing: “Copper seems to be the new aluminum,” Florian Gerlach observed. “There’s copper everywhere you looked. When metal was used, chances are it was copper. It was used as extensively as aluminum is in today’s products.” Roman Gebhard noted the extensive use of LED lighting in products. “LED has clearly matured,” he said. “LED applications for lighting are much more prevalent than we’ve seen in previous years. And the designs are really starting to take on and celebrate that new technology.” Roman pointed to the task lamps designed by Naoto Fukosawa for Artemide (see below) as an example. “Design” and “craftsmanship” are converging much more than we’ve seen in recent years explains Hanne Trafnik. “The approach of ‘design locally but manufacture around the world’ is evolving to ways of designing and building products that use materials expertise and the ‘craftsmanship’ found in experienced hands or through sophisticated machinery or robotics,” she says. “After a time of growing distance between the designer and the manufacturer, there are more and more opportunities for a reemergence of traditional craftsmanship thanks in part to new digital tools and services based on our ever-more-connected world. Even big players like Tom Dixon showcased works around this topic.” As what once was a very Italian-centric forum evolves into a global gathering with thousands of attendees from Asia, the U.S. and seemingly every corner of the world, the salone continues to be an exciting source of inspiration and a great way to get a sense for new possibilities in design.
